The open-concept great room is filled with light from the full wall of windows overlooking the river, with views from all sides to the forest outside. The main level features two bedrooms, a full bathroom, and laundry facilities, while the upstairs principal bedroom offers an ensuite with a shower. The kitchen is fully-equipped for cooking and serving meals, and even includes a few extras such as a waffle maker, popcorn machine, blender and Keurig coffee maker. The upstairs loft den is a family-friendly hideout that features a 55" television with streaming services, Wii system, board games and a desk / workstation. WiFi is available.

Step out from the living room to the wrap-around deck where you will find a propane firepit surrounded by Adirondack chairs, a hot tub and a barbecue. A staircase to the river below features an ecological viewing deck for expansive views and water access. Launch a kayak or canoe from the floating dock and paddle upstream. Keep a lookout for wildlife on this tidal river and you may see deer, turtles, beavers, otters, seals, or breaching fish. A birders haven, with visits from eagles, hawks, owls, blue jays, woodpeckers, doves, robins, swallows, pheasants, and more. Or if you are so inclined, cast your line and try for striped bass, white perch, or trout (per provincial regulations) on this prominent fishing river.

Location

The West River Chalet is a short 20-minute drive from beautiful sandy beaches along the Northumberland Strait that enjoy the warmest waters in Eastern Canada (Waterside Beach and Caribou-Munroe's Island Provincial Parks).

A popular nearby attraction is Shelby Ranch (7-minute drive), featuring trail rides, pony rides, wagon rides, sleigh rides as well as a petting farm, a mechanical bull and family events throughout the year.

The charming Town of Pictou (home of the historic "Ship Hector") is just a 10-minute drive, offering waterfront dining and boutiques, the Decoste Centre for live entertainment, as well as grocery, liquor store, pharmacy, banks and fast food.

A prominent hiking hub, this area features trails for all abilities spanning many kilometres and connecting to a trans provincial network. Highlights include the Fitzpatrick Mountain Trail, Durham Hill Trail, Dalhousie Mountain Trail, Jitney Trail, Juniper Head Trail, Green Hill Provincial Park and Trail, and the Trans Canada Trail, which can all be accessed within minutes of the property.

Situated at just about the halfway point of the Sunrise Trail, the West River Chalet is a central starting point from which to explore Nova Scotia's northeastern coast. To the northwest, head toward Tatamagouche and beyond to find golf courses, farms, beaches and quaint towns offering fine restaurants, colourful shops, and art galleries. Venture southeast toward Antigonish, past the popular Melmerby Beach, to find fossils at the Sea Cliffs of Arisaig. Visit the Cape George Point Lighthouse and Ballantyne's Cove, and venture into the university town of Antigonish. Also check out the "Good Cheer Trail" map to visit some of the great wineries, breweries and distilleries along the way.

The chalet is just 20 minutes to the Town of New Glasgow, 40 minutes to Truro, 1 hour 40 minutes to Halifax, and 1 hour 30 minutes to Prince Edward Island via Northumberland Ferries from Pictou.
